Browns Take Mayfield No. 1 Overall

(CLEVELAND) - Baker Mayfield, represented by Jack Mills, is the newest Cleveland Browns quarterback, after the team selected the Oklahoma gunslinger and Heisman Trophy winner with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Here are a few Baker Mayfield tidbits to help you get to know the first pick of the John Dorsey era in Cleveland.

1. He Started at Texas Tech

Before he wound up as an Oklahoma Sooner, Mayfield was a Red Raider. In fact, the Lake Travis (Texas) product became the first walk-on to ever start a season opener for Texas Tech … and he did so as a true freshman.

Mayfield quickly proved he belonged. In his first career start, he torched SMU for over 400 yards and 4 TDs. An injury derailed his career in Lubbock and he ultimately lost the starting gig to Davis Webb, currently the New York Giants backup and a 2017 third-round pick after he transferred to Cal when he lost his job to Patrick Mahomes.

2. His transfer to Oklahoma led to a new NCAA rule.

Mayfield had to sit out his first season at Oklahoma due to NCAA rules on transfers. However, Mayfield argued that because he was a walk-on at Texas Tech and was going to be a walk-on at Oklahoma, he should not be subjected to the rules which specifically govern scholarship athletes.

The “Baker Mayfield” rule, which was passed in time to allow him to play for the Sooners in 2017, allows walk-on players to transfer without sacrificing a year of eligibility. Interestingly, Texas Tech voted in favor of the rule.

3. He’s the 7th Heisman winning QB to go No. 1.

Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy in 2017. He joins an eclectic group of Heisman-winning quarterbacks to be selected No. 1 overall since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970. He is the second Oklahoma Sooners QB on the list, following Sam Bradford.

4. He’s Fiery and Controversial.

Mayfield planted a Sooners flag at midfield after a 31-16 victory against Ohio State in September. In November, he motioned toward the Kansas sideline after their players refused a pregame handshake.

5. He Impressed Cleveland Brass to Go No. 1.

The Browns selection of Mayfield as No. 1 overall surprised many after months of the team being tied to Southern California's Sam Darnold and Wyoming's Josh Allen. But there was a late buzz surrounding Mayfield in the lead-up to the event, with multiple reports indicating Cleveland was ready to go in a surprising direction.
